Despite President Reagan's plans for sweeping cuts in federal spending the administration acknowledged dwindling confidence Thursday that Reagan can fulfill his promise to balance the budget by 1983. Leonard Ernest Smith of Landrum has been nominated by Spartanburg senators as one of 13 magistrates for appointment by Gov. Richard Riley. One thousand Spartan Mills employees will take an unscheduled and unpaid vacation this week. The company is curtailing operations for one week. The City of Saluda is having an open house today from 10 a m. to 4 p.m in celebration of its centennial year On display at the city hall will be photographic scenes of early Saluda The Appalachian Conference Basketball Tournament will begin tonight between the No 4 and No. 5 JV. girls and boys basketball teams at the Landrum gym. The games are at 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m. The Polk County Continued On Back Page A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Johnson of Saluda are parents of a daughter born Feb. 10th at Fletcher Hospital Brewster Cornwell Is Kiwanis Speaker The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at Pacolet River Plantation. The guest speaker will be Brewster Cornwell who will talk on the "Oak Hall Development " A native of Louden County, Virginia, Mr. Cornwell is a graduate of William and Mary where he was a Business Administration major. He was in the wholesale meat business before coming to Tryon in July of 1978 He is a past president of the Rotary Club in Leesburgh, Va and headed the Red Cross Fund Drive there. He played basketball at William & Mary and was an outstanding golfer. He now enjoys tennis and he and his wife, Vesta, are frequently seen on the tennis courts Jerry Jennings is in charge of the program. Congressman Bill Hendon has announced that he has appointed Asheville attorney Robert F. Orr as district assistant Orr. 34, is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Kay Orr of Hendersonville. He is a graduate of Hendersonville High School and UNC at Chapel Hill. Orr also received his degree in law from UNC in 1975 Basketball Tournament The Appalachian Basketball Tournament gets underway tonight at the Landrum gymnasium. The JV game is at 5 p.m.; girls game at 6:30 and boys game at 8 p.m. The No. 4 and No. 5 teams will play each other. Wednesday night the No. 3 and No. 6 teams will play. U.D.C. Meets Friday The monthly meeting of the Campobello Chapter of U.D.C. will be held on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p m. at the home of Mrs. C. W. McCall, Sr. in Tryon. Mrs. 0. A. Matthews will be in charge of the program. Time Marches On We came across a July 21, 1961 Bulletin the other day and noticed that the Tryon Federal Savings softball team beat Columbus 8 to 6. This was in the days of fast pitch. The winning pitcher was Shank Hipp House Burns The Columbus Fire Department was called to the William Holm house on Peniel Road Thursday at 11:33 p.m. The house which is the former Claude Parks home, was completely Destroyed. No one was home at the time and firemen weren’t able to tell the cause of the fire, the house had been burning for sometime before it was discovered. Bloodmobile Set For Mon., Feb. 23 The Red Cross bloodmobile will be in Tryon Monday, Feb. 23 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church from noon to 5:30 p.m. The quota is 125 pints. Points emphasized by Mrs. Sidney Blaine, in charge of donor recruitment, include: 1. If a donor had malaria in the past and had had no recurrence in 3 years and lived within the U. S., he/she may donate blood 2. Any donor having had yellow jaundice or hepatitis cannot donate blood. If a donor was exposed to yellow jaundice or hepatitis, he/she must wait six months. 3. Blood donations may be designated as memorials and will be acknowledged to the family concerned. 4. Blood may be donated to patients anywhere in the country and credit will be made to the patient’s hospital through the nearest Red Cross Blood Center. “We were pleased with the response to the December 29 bloodmobile (121 pints) and look forward to meeting our goal of 125 this time,” Mrs Blaine said. "Anyone who gave then and is still healthy can safely give again," she added Fire Call The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to the Fish home on Laurel Way, Tryon The house which is being occupied by Mr Sullivan was not damaged
